Who orders trade steel-look aluminium windows?

Mostly builders and main contractors, architects and specifiers, housing developers and conservatory and extension specialists. Typical uses include warehouse and loft conversions; period house extensions; contemporary homes wanting an industrial look.

Steel-look windows depend on the proportion of the glazing bars, so we confirm the bar layout for every window on your quote before production.

They are aluminium rather than steel, which keeps the weight down and allows a thermal break. Where a heritage specification calls for real steel, tell us and we will say whether we can quote it.

Black and dark grey are the usual colours, but any RAL colour can be powder coated if the design calls for it.

Matching French doors and fixed screens can be supplied on the same order so the sightlines line up across the elevation.

How should you measure?

Send elevation drawings with your schedule if you want a specific glazing bar layout, so each pane size is agreed before manufacture.

Which building regulations apply?

Replacement windows in England should meet Approved Document L: a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or a Window Energy Rating of band B. Approved Document F expects background ventilation to be no worse than before, which usually means trickle vents. Glazing in critical locations must break safely, be robust or in small panes, or be permanently protected under Approved Document K, which in practice usually means toughened or laminated safety glass. Rooms that need an escape route may need an escape window under Approved Document B. Replacing windows is notifiable building work: the installer self-certifies through a competent person scheme such as FENSA or Certass, or the work goes through building control.

Wales

In Wales the Welsh Government's own Approved Documents apply. Replacement windows must meet the thermal values in Approved Document L (Wales), which differ from England in places, and safety glazing in critical locations is covered by Approved Document N in Wales. Replacing windows is notifiable building work, normally self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or approved by building control.

Scotland

In Scotland the Building (Scotland) Regulations and the Technical Handbooks apply. Replacing windows in a house does not normally need a building warrant, but the new windows must still meet the building standards, including the energy standards in Section 6 and the safety glazing standard in Section 4. Listed buildings and conservation areas have their own controls, so check with the local authority.

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland the Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) apply, with guidance in the Technical Booklets: Booklet F1 covers energy in dwellings and Booklet V covers glazing safety. Contact your council's building control service before replacing windows to confirm what application is needed.

More detail: Approved Document L guide safety glazing guide. Your installer or designer remains responsible for compliance and any notification.

Questions trade customers ask

Are these real steel windows?

No. They are slim aluminium windows designed to look like traditional steel windows, with a thermal break for better insulation.

Can I choose the glazing bar pattern?

Yes. Send the pattern per window, or an elevation drawing, and it is confirmed on your quote.

Are steel-look windows suitable for listed buildings?

That depends on the listing and the council. Check with the conservation officer before ordering.

Can you supply matching doors?

Yes, French doors and glazed screens in the same style can go on the same order.
