Who orders trade triple glazed units?
Mostly housing developers, architects and specifiers, window and door installers and glaziers and glass merchants. Typical uses include new-build and low-energy homes; noisy roadside properties; window upgrades where frames allow.
Triple glazed units are thicker and heavier than double glazed units, so the frame must be designed to take them.
A third pane lowers the U-value of the glass. How much of that reaches the whole window depends on the frame as well.
An acoustic laminated pane in a triple unit can help with traffic noise. Tell us the source of the noise and we suggest a build-up.
Heavier units may need different hinges or rollers in opening sashes and doors. Check with the frame supplier if you are reglazing existing frames.
How should you measure?
Check the frame rebate takes the overall unit thickness before you order; most older frames are not deep enough for triple glazing.
Which building regulations apply?
Under Approved Document K, glazing in critical locations (doors, and side panels within 300mm of a door, up to 1500mm above floor level; other glazing below 800mm) must break safely, be robust or in small panes, or be permanently protected. Toughened and laminated safety glass are classified to BS EN 12600. Replacing only the glass in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair rather than notifiable work.
Wales
In Wales, safety glazing in critical locations, such as doors, side panels and low-level glazing, is covered by Approved Document N. Safety glass is classified to BS EN 12600. Replacing glass alone in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair.
Scotland
In Scotland, glazing in areas where people could collide with it must follow the safety glazing standard in Section 4 of the Technical Handbooks. Safety glass is classified to BS EN 12600.
Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, glazing safety in critical locations is covered by Technical Booklet V. Safety glass is classified to BS EN 12600.

Questions trade customers ask
Can I put triple glazing in my existing windows?
Only if the frames have a deep enough rebate and hardware rated for the extra weight. Most older frames do not.
Is triple glazing worth it?
It lowers heat loss through the glass and can help with noise. Whether it is worth the extra cost depends on the property and the frames.
How thick are triple glazed units?
Commonly 36mm to 44mm overall, depending on the build-up.
Do you make acoustic triple units?
Yes, with a laminated acoustic pane.
