Who orders trade uPVC French doors?

Mostly window and door installers, conservatory and extension specialists and builders and main contractors. Typical uses include kitchen and living-room patio access; extensions and garden rooms; juliet balconies with a balustrade.

French doors are ordered as a pair, and the master leaf, opening direction and handle side are confirmed on your quote.

For upper-floor openings with a Juliet balcony, tell us the balustrade type and fixing so the frame is made with the right fixing allowances.

All glass in French doors is safety glass. Toughened sealed units are standard.

Order matching windows or side panels together so the finish and sightlines are consistent.

How should you measure?

French doors usually open outward in the UK; check there is room for both leaves to swing fully and that nothing outside blocks them.

Which building regulations apply?

Replacement external doors in England should meet a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K under Approved Document L. Glass in doors and side panels below 1500mm is a critical location under Approved Document K, so it must break safely (toughened or laminated to BS EN 12600), be robust or in small panes, or be permanently protected. Doors into new homes also need to meet Approved Document Q for security, which is usually shown with PAS 24. Replacing a door that is more than half glazed is notifiable building work, self-certified through a competent person scheme or approved by building control.

Wales

In Wales, replacement external doors must meet Approved Document L (Wales), and glass in doors and side panels in critical locations must meet the safety glazing guidance in Approved Document N, usually with toughened or laminated safety glass. Replacing a door that is more than half glazed is notifiable building work, self-certified through a competent person scheme or approved by building control.

Scotland

In Scotland, replacement doors in a house do not normally need a building warrant, but they must still meet the building standards in the Technical Handbooks, including energy and safety glazing. Check with the local authority for flats, listed buildings and conservation areas.

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, replacement doors should meet the energy guidance in Technical Booklet F1, and glass in doors and side panels the glazing safety guidance in Booklet V. Check with your council's building control service before work starts.
