Who orders trade uPVC patio doors?
Mostly window and door installers, landlords and property managers and builders and main contractors. Typical uses include rear elevations onto gardens; bungalows and ground-floor flats; replacing old aluminium sliders.
Patio doors are specified by overall size, number of panes and which panels slide. Your quote shows the layout as a simple elevation so it can be checked before production.
Glass in patio doors is toughened safety glass as standard.
Patio doors are a common replacement for older aluminium sliders, and the new frame can usually go into the same opening once the old frame is out.
Where a level threshold is needed, ask us about the drainage detail so water is kept out at the threshold.
How should you measure?
State the sliding panel and the side it opens to for each set, viewed from outside.
Which building regulations apply?
Replacement external doors in England should meet a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K under Approved Document L. Glass in doors and side panels below 1500mm is a critical location under Approved Document K, so it must break safely (toughened or laminated to BS EN 12600), be robust or in small panes, or be permanently protected. Doors into new homes also need to meet Approved Document Q for security, which is usually shown with PAS 24. Replacing a door that is more than half glazed is notifiable building work, self-certified through a competent person scheme or approved by building control.
Wales
In Wales, replacement external doors must meet Approved Document L (Wales), and glass in doors and side panels in critical locations must meet the safety glazing guidance in Approved Document N, usually with toughened or laminated safety glass. Replacing a door that is more than half glazed is notifiable building work, self-certified through a competent person scheme or approved by building control.
Scotland
In Scotland, replacement doors in a house do not normally need a building warrant, but they must still meet the building standards in the Technical Handbooks, including energy and safety glazing. Check with the local authority for flats, listed buildings and conservation areas.
Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, replacement doors should meet the energy guidance in Technical Booklet F1, and glass in doors and side panels the glazing safety guidance in Booklet V. Check with your council's building control service before work starts.
