Who orders trade aluminium sliding doors?
Mostly builders and main contractors, housing developers, architects and specifiers and conservatory and extension specialists. Typical uses include contemporary extensions and new builds; openings with a view; large rear elevations.
Sliding doors keep the glass in big uninterrupted panels, which is why they are chosen where the view matters most.
Very large panels can be heavy and awkward to handle on site. We give panel weights on the quote so you can plan lifting and access.
Track layout decides how much of the opening you can open. Two-track sets open half the width; three-track sets open two thirds.
Order matching aluminium windows on the same schedule so colours and finishes match.
How should you measure?
Large glass panels are heavy. Check site access for delivery and handling before you confirm panel sizes.
Which building regulations apply?
Replacement external doors in England should meet a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K under Approved Document L. Glass in doors and side panels below 1500mm is a critical location under Approved Document K, so it must break safely (toughened or laminated to BS EN 12600), be robust or in small panes, or be permanently protected. Doors into new homes also need to meet Approved Document Q for security, which is usually shown with PAS 24. Replacing a door that is more than half glazed is notifiable building work, self-certified through a competent person scheme or approved by building control.
Wales
In Wales, replacement external doors must meet Approved Document L (Wales), and glass in doors and side panels in critical locations must meet the safety glazing guidance in Approved Document N, usually with toughened or laminated safety glass. Replacing a door that is more than half glazed is notifiable building work, self-certified through a competent person scheme or approved by building control.
Scotland
In Scotland, replacement doors in a house do not normally need a building warrant, but they must still meet the building standards in the Technical Handbooks, including energy and safety glazing. Check with the local authority for flats, listed buildings and conservation areas.
Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, replacement doors should meet the energy guidance in Technical Booklet F1, and glass in doors and side panels the glazing safety guidance in Booklet V. Check with your council's building control service before work starts.

Questions trade customers ask
How big can sliding door panels be?
That depends on the system and glass. We confirm maximum panel sizes and weights when we price your opening.
Bifold or sliding doors?
Bifolds open almost the whole width; sliders open part of it but keep larger glass panels and slimmer sightlines. Our guide compares the two.
Can sliding doors have a flush threshold?
Yes, with a drainage detail outside. Tell us when you order.
Are they secure?
Sliding panels have multi-point locks and anti-lift measures.
