Who orders trade conservatory roofs?

Mostly conservatory and extension specialists, window and door installers and builders and main contractors. Typical uses include turning a conservatory into a year-round room; replacing failed polycarbonate roofs; updating glazed roofs.

A replacement roof is designed around the existing conservatory, so we need its style, frame sizes and photos before we can give a firm price.

In England and Wales, replacing a glazed or polycarbonate conservatory roof with a solid tiled roof usually means the conservatory is no longer exempt from building regulations, so approval from building control is normally needed.

The existing frames and base must be able to take the new roof. Your installer or a structural engineer should check this before ordering.

Tiled roofs often include glazed panels to keep some daylight. Tell us how many you want when you request a quote.

How should you measure?

Replacement roofs are designed from a site survey of the existing conservatory, including frame sizes, wall plate positions and roof style. Send photos and measurements with your enquiry.

Which building regulations apply?

Replacement rooflights and roof lanterns in England should meet a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K under Approved Document L. A lantern in a new extension is covered by the extension's own building regulations approval. Replacing a glazed or polycarbonate conservatory roof with a solid roof usually takes the conservatory out of the exemption, so building control approval is normally needed.

Wales

In Wales, rooflights and lanterns must meet the thermal requirements in Approved Document L (Wales). Changing a conservatory's glazed roof to a solid roof will normally need building control approval. Check the detail with the local authority building control team.

Scotland

In Scotland, new rooflights and lanterns in an extension are covered by the extension's building warrant. For changes to a conservatory roof, check with the local authority verifier whether a warrant is needed.

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, rooflights and lanterns should meet the energy guidance in the Technical Booklets. Check with your council's building control service before changing a conservatory roof.

More detail: Approved Document L guide safety glazing guide. Your installer or designer remains responsible for compliance and any notification.

Questions trade customers ask

Do I need building regulations approval to put a tiled roof on a conservatory?

In England and Wales a solid roof usually takes the conservatory out of the building regulations exemption, so building control approval is normally needed. Rules differ in Scotland and Northern Ireland; check locally.

Can the existing frames take a tiled roof?

That must be checked on site by your installer or an engineer. The roof system is designed around what is there.

Do you fit the roof?

No, we supply the roof kit to trade customers for their own installers to fit.

How long does a replacement roof take to make?

The date is confirmed when the design is signed off and the order placed.
