Who orders trade laminated and acoustic glass?
Mostly glaziers and glass merchants, shopfitters, architects and specifiers and window and door installers. Typical uses include overhead and roof glazing inner panes; shopfronts and ground-floor security; acoustic units for noisy roads.
If laminated glass breaks, the interlayer holds the pieces in place, which is why it is used overhead and where people could fall against the glass.
An acoustic interlayer damps sound better than standard laminated glass of the same thickness. In a sealed unit, combining panes of different thicknesses helps further.
Thicker laminates slow down a break-in attempt. For security specifications, tell us the requirement and we will suggest a makeup; ratings belong to tested products.
Laminated glass is also used as the inner pane of rooflights and roof lanterns so that broken glass does not fall into the room.
How should you measure?
Laminated glass can be cut after manufacture, but give us finished sizes so edges are processed correctly.
Which building regulations apply?
Under Approved Document K, glazing in critical locations (doors, and side panels within 300mm of a door, up to 1500mm above floor level; other glazing below 800mm) must break safely, be robust or in small panes, or be permanently protected. Toughened and laminated safety glass are classified to BS EN 12600. Replacing only the glass in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair rather than notifiable work.
Wales
In Wales, safety glazing in critical locations, such as doors, side panels and low-level glazing, is covered by Approved Document N. Safety glass is classified to BS EN 12600. Replacing glass alone in an existing frame is generally treated as a repair.
Scotland
In Scotland, glazing in areas where people could collide with it must follow the safety glazing standard in Section 4 of the Technical Handbooks. Safety glass is classified to BS EN 12600.
Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, glazing safety in critical locations is covered by Technical Booklet V. Safety glass is classified to BS EN 12600.

Questions trade customers ask
What is 6.4mm laminated glass?
Two 3mm panes bonded with a 0.38mm interlayer, a common safety laminate.
Does acoustic glass really reduce noise?
An acoustic interlayer reduces noise more than standard laminated glass of the same thickness. The overall result also depends on the frame and how the window is fitted.
Can laminated glass go in a sealed unit?
Yes, as one or more panes of a double or triple unit.
Is laminated glass security glass?
Thicker laminates resist attack better. Formal security ratings apply to tested glass products, not a thickness alone.
