Trade steel-look aluminium windows in County Durham

Ordering steel-look aluminium windows for jobs in County Durham

They are aluminium rather than steel, which keeps the weight down and allows a thermal break. Where a heritage specification calls for real steel, tell us and we will say whether we can quote it.

Steel-look windows depend on the proportion of the glazing bars, so we confirm the bar layout for every window on your quote before production.

Specification at a glance

• Double glazed sealed units
• Powder coated, usually black or dark grey
• Heritage-style handles and hinges
• Matching doors and screens available
• Side-hung, top-hung and fixed lights

Building regulations in England

Replacement windows in England should meet Approved Document L: a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or a Window Energy Rating of band B. Approved Document F expects background ventilation to be no worse than before, which usually means trickle vents. Glazing in critical locations must break safely, be robust or in small panes, or be permanently protected under Approved Document K, which in practice usually means toughened or laminated safety glass. Rooms that need an escape route may need an escape window under Approved Document B. Replacing windows is notifiable building work: the installer self-certifies through a competent person scheme such as FENSA or Certass, or the work goes through building control.

Before anything goes into production you get a written order acknowledgement with sizes, finishes and handing for every item. Check it carefully, because made-to-measure items cannot be returned if the sizes were wrong.
