Bifold or sliding doors?

How bifold and sliding doors compare on opening width, glass and cost.

Opening width

Bifold doors fold back to open almost the full width. Sliding doors open half or two thirds of the width, depending on the number of tracks.

Glass and frame

Sliding doors have fewer, larger panels and slimmer interlocks, so more glass when closed. Bifolds have a frame line at every panel.

Everyday use

Bifolds can include a traffic door for everyday access. Sliders open with one panel.

Structure

Both need a level, stiff head. Bifolds hang or roll on gear that loads the structure above, so check the lintel.
